Industrialist Ratul Puri, Chairman Hindustan Power, Champions Battery Energy Storage for India

The Business Philosophy of Ratul Puri, Chairman, Hindustan Power

As India accelerates its shift toward renewable energy, with solar leading the way, a key challenge is emerging: how to store clean energy efficiently. Equally important is the ability to store and deliver power when it is needed most.

At this critical stage in India’s energy transition, Ratul Puri, Chairman of Hindustan Power, actively supports Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Through focused leadership and targeted investments, he is helping strengthen Hindustan Power’s role in building India’s clean energy storage ecosystem.

Who Is Ratul Puri? The Industrialist Behind the Energy Push

Ratul Puri is a prominent figure in India's power sector who has played a significant role in shaping Hindustan Power's strategic direction toward sustainable energy solutions. His leadership emphasizes transitioning from conventional power generation to renewable sources, positioning the company for long-term growth in the clean energy market. Through innovative strategies and forward-thinking initiatives, Ratul Puri has focused on sustainability while maintaining operational excellence and business viability.

Awards and Recognition

Ratul Puri has been recognized with several prestigious honours, including Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young (2002), one of the Top 21 Young Leaders in India by Business Today (2007), Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum (2008) and CEO of the Year by the World Brand Congress (2014) and the Asian Power Awards (2015), demonstrating his exceptional leadership and entrepreneurial spirit. He has also been honoured by The Economic Times in 2014 for his outstanding contribution to the infrastructure sector in India.

Puri has been a prominent voice in global discussions on climate resilience, leading several key conversations at the World Economic Forum.

The Battery Energy Storage Imperative in India

As India ramps up its solar capacity, the ability to store clean energy has become critical. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) ensure that power is available when demand is high, not just when the sun is shining.

Efficient storage helps balance the grid, reduce dependence on fossil fuels and make renewable energy more reliable and cost-effective. Scaling up battery storage is now a must for India to make its energy transition reliable and effective.

Why India Needs BESS:

  • Solar and wind energy are available only during certain hours.
  • Peak power demand often occurs when solar and wind generation is unavailable.
  • Grid failures and instability arise due to supply–demand mismatches.
  • Conventional backup solutions are inefficient and environmentally costly.

Battery Energy Storage Systems allow energy producers to store excess generation and release it during peak demand, grid outages, or cloudy/windless days.

Hindustan Power Awarded LOI for 120 MWh Battery Energy Storage Project in Bihar

Hindustan Power has been awarded a Letter of Intent (LOI) by the Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited to develop a 120 MWh standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) across three key grid substations in Bihar — Bhagalpur, Udakishanganj, and Sitamarhi (40 MWh each). The project, secured through tariff‑based competitive bidding and to be implemented on a build‑own‑operate‑transfer (BOOT) basis, aims to enhance grid stability, support peak‑hour demand balancing, and ensure uninterrupted, high‑quality power supply in the state. Scheduled for commissioning within 18 months of the agreement, this initiative aligns with the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s 500 MWh BESS program in Bihar.

Ratul Puri's Vision for Hindustan Power's Clean Energy Transformation

Ratul Puri’s vision for Hindustan Power’s clean energy transformation focuses on building a balanced energy ecosystem that supports growth while being environmentally responsible. It emphasizes a mix of transitional energy, solar, and solar battery solutions to ensure reliability while steadily reducing carbon impact.
He sees clean energy as both a necessity and a long-term business opportunity. His approach includes improving efficiency, modernizing infrastructure, and adopting advanced technologies to optimize performance. This balanced strategy enables Hindustan Power to meet current energy demands while moving toward a more sustainable future.

BESS and India’s Net Zero Commitments

India has committed to becoming Net Zero by 2070. Battery energy storage systems are crucial for this mission. Ratul Puri’s strategy aligns perfectly with India’s roadmap:
Reducing dependence on coal and gas peaker plants
Supporting 24/7 renewable energy at scale
Decentralized grid solutions for rural electrification
By investing early, Hindustan Power becomes a first mover, gaining technical and policy expertise that can be monetized later.
